The Gnome Speaks

Luckily, this gnome seems to be much more easy to deal with than his
blow-hard leader. He patiently listens for Carideth to finish his
speech, and then slowly (as if carefully choosing his words), says the
following in a clam tone:
"I understand your reasoning, sir ranger, but I am bound to obey the laws
of my people with honour, sacrificing my own life if need be. I realize
our leader may have appeared rather arrogant-" he winces as he hears his
restrained captain curse violently at him "-but that is still no reason
to strike him, and so you are not being unjustly charged with the crime.
With regards to the trespassing, we realize it is possible that you may
have stumbled into this territory by accident, but we cannot be entirely
sure of that, and so ask that you can be questioned. Already by your
actions we are beginning to have our doubts as to which side you serve.
If it would please you, sir ranger, I apologize to you on my captain's
behalf for his slurs, and sincerely hope you will withdraw your threat
to fight us. Know ye that we are a peaceful race, and that we seek only
to exterminate that which is evil in the world. It would be only with the most
extreme reluctance that we would attack you, and I swear by my beard that your
life shall be spared in the event that this should come to blows."
The gnomes make no move to attack you (save their leader who still seems bent
on destroying the lot of you, but he is being held back).
